AMSE SUMMER SCHOOL 2026 ON "INEQUALITY, WEALTH AND TAXATION"

This Summer School covers recent research in the economics of taxation and public finance, with a special focus on how governments raise revenue, design policies, and address inequality. The program combines theoretical insights with cutting-edge empirical methods.

Around the world, governments face unprecedented challenges - rising inequality, fiscal pressure from aging populations and the increasing mobility of both capital and high-wealth individuals. These developments have pushed fundamental questions about how to raise revenue efficiently and equitably back to the forefront of economic inquiry.

At the same time, new data sources and empirical tools-ranging from administrative tax records and randomized audits to quasi-experimental designs and international reporting systems-have transformed our ability to study taxpayer behavior and evaluate fiscal policies. These advances have sparked a wave of innovative research on wealth taxation, capital income taxation, land taxation, tax evasion, and global tax enforcement.

During the three days of the Summer School, participants will explore key topics such as the design and the effects taxes on capital, wealth and land, and the behavioral responses of individuals and firms, including compliance and mobility.
Lectures will be given by leading experts in the field:

  • Clara Martinez-Toledano (Imperial College Business School),
  • David Seim (Stockholm University),
  • Arthur Guillouzouic (CNRS, AMSE),
  • Ségal Le Guern Herry (Aix-Marseille Université, AMSE),
  • Alain Trannoy (EHESS, AMSE).

This year’s summer school should be of interest to graduate students or academics who want to expand their knowledge in this area of research and to practitioners who want to familiarize themselves with the key advances in theoretical and empirical models at the interplay of economics of taxation and public finance. Participants will have the opportunity to present their research in workshop during this event.

The summer school will take place in the city of Marseille and there is no possibility to attend the classes online.
